Education

Riccardo Scateni got a laurea degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa in 1987 discussing a graduation thesis titled "Un linguaggio grafico orientato a PHIGS per ambienti hardware a basse prestazioni" (A PHIGS-oriented graphical language for low-performace hardware environments).

Positions held

IBM Research

From 1988 to 1989 he held a postdoctoral fellowship at IBM Research, Kingston, NY (USA) where he developed a visualization package for molecular modelling applications.

CERFACS

In 1990 he moved to Toulouse, France where he held another postdoctoral position at CERFACS. He was directly involved in the development of an object-oriented environment for the interactive design of multigridded computational domains in computational fluid dynamics.

CRS4

In 1992 he joined CRS4 (Centro di Ricerca, Sviluppo e Studi Superiori in Sardegna - Center for Advanced Studies, Research adn Development in Sardinia) a newly established research center set up by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. In CRS4 he held a position as a researcher till dec 1994 and as a senior researcher till sep 2001. In jun 1996 he was appointed as responsible for the technology transfer for the center and from jan 1998 until dec 2000 he was assistant to the CRS4 CEO. IN this new position he was responsible to set up end coordinate all the research activities involving public funding (regional, national and European); he was also in charge of keeping the contacts with industrial world and the academy.

University of Cagliari

As of oct 2001 he is an associate professor of Computer Science at the University of Cagliari where he teaches Object-Oriented Programming Languages and Computer Graphics courses.

Teaching

His teaching activity began in 1993 and 1994 when he taught courses of Algorithms and Data Structures for the Math's undergrad students at the Univ. of Cagliari. In 1995 he started to teach Computer Graphics for the CS undergrad program. In this period he was master thesis advisor for 12 math and CS thesis.

Management and Evaluation of Research

During the years he has had direct responsibility for research projects funded in excess of 500 KEuros and collaborated in the management of research projects funded for more than 4 MEuros. He is very skilled in writing and quite skilled in evaluating research projects and is a formal member of the panel of experts set up by the Italian Ministry of University and Research for the evaluation of industrial research projects (Albo degli Esperti MIUR).

Organization and Reviewing

He was Co-chair of the 6th Workshop EuroGraphics on Scientific Visualization and Scientific Secretary of the International Symposium on Scientific Visualization held with the annual conference of AICA (Associazione Italiana per il Calcolo Automatico - Italian Association for Automatic Computation), both held in Sardinia in 1995. He has been during the years member of several program committees and reviewer for scientific conferences and journals.
